The Weaving Together project focuses on the figure of Orpheus and part of the work will be done in collaboration with Omma Studio Theater (Crete, Greece). In August, the artistic team will work at the Omma Studio Theater and its Center of Theater Anthropology and Studies, together with the actor and director Antonis Diamantis.
During the February 15th meeting we asked Antonis to tell us about the dynamics of his participation as a partner and how this partnership affects the creative process.
“Before describing the activities that we will carry out together in Crete, it seems to me important to convey some contents regarding our culture and the relationship that Greek culture has with mythology. Mythology in Greece is something alive, it’s not a just narration, it’s an element you can encounter in language, in everyday life, in everyday behavior. In our culture mythology is certainly a symbolism but at the same time it is also a real way of life. It is necessary that the artists who work on this myth understand that the myth of Orpheus is like a tree, because every Greek myth is connected to all the other myths, therefore it is necessary to imagine the myths as a sort of forest, the myth of Orpheus is one of the trees of this ecosystem.
Prima di descrivere le attività che svolgeremo insieme a Creta, mi sembra importante trasmettere alcuni contenuti rispetto all nostra cultura e al rapporto che la cultura greca ha con la mitologia. La mitologia in Grecia è qualcosa di vivo, non è una narrazione, è un elemento che puoi incontrare nel linguaggio, nella vita di tutti i giorni, nei comportamenti quotidiani. Nella nostra cultura la mitologia è certamente un simbolismo ma è allo stesso tempo anche un vero e proprio modo di vivere. E’ necessario che gli artisti che lavorano su questo mito comprendano che il mito di Orfeo è come un albero, perché ogni mito greco è collegato a tutti gli altri miti, bisogna dunque immaginare i miti come una sorta di foresta, il mito di Orfeo è uno degli alberi di questo ecosistema.
Another element that needs to be internalized is that Orpheus is a bridge figure between reality and religion. His origin is aristocratic as it is said that he is the son of a great king of Thrace, but there is a narration that also indicates him as the son of a god, the god Apollo. The story of Orpheus is therefore a story halfway between the real world and the religious world.
Un altro elemento che è necessario interiorizzare è che Orfeo è una figura ponte tra realtà e religione. La sua origine è aristocratica poiché si narra che sia il figlio di un grande Re della Tracia, ma c’è una narrazione che lo indica anche come figlio di un Dio, il Dio Apollo. La storia di Orfeo è dunque una storia a metà tra ciò mondo reale e mondo religioso.
During the stay, to fully understand these concepts, we will visit Knossos Palace as well as Knossos Museum, the most important archaeological sites in Crete and the most important centers of Minoan civilization, the oldest in Europe. These sites are linked to ancient myths of classical Greece, such as Minos and the labyrinth built by Daedalus, and that of Theseus and the Minotaur. There we will be able to see all the preserved objects of this ancient civilization, to understand and imagine their way of living and thinking. We will study together the evolution of the lyra instrument and we will invite musicians expert in ancient music to play pieces of music of that time with ancient instruments.
Let’s not forget that the myth of Orpheus is strongly linked to music and that with the lyra, Orpheus fascinated anyone around him. It is precisely through the myth of Orpheus that the birth of music in the world is narrated.
Durante il soggiorno, per comprendere appieno questi concetti visiteremo il Palazzo di Cnosso così come il Museo di Cnosso, i più importanti siti archeologici di Creta e i più importanti centri della civiltà minoica e i più antichi d’Europa. Questi siti sono legati ad antichi miti della Grecia classica, come Minosse e il labirinto costruito da Dedalo, e quello di Teseo e il Minotauro. Lì potremo vedere tutti gli oggetti conservati di questa antica civiltà, per comprendere e immaginare il loro modo di vivere e di pensare. Studieremo insieme l’evoluzione dello strumento della Lyra e inviteremo musicisti esperti in musica antica a suonare brani dell’epoca con gli strumenti antichi. Non dimentichiamo che il mito di Orfeo è fortemente legato alla musica e che proprio con la Lyra, Orfeo affascinava chiunque avesse introno a sé. È proprio attraverso il mito di Orfeo infatti che si narra la nascita della musica nel mondo.
In this myth there is another element that is very difficult to understand in a profound way, namely the constant presence of an invisible and underground world represented by Hades, which symbolizes what remains invisible of the world. We will explore all these elements in order to fully understand the myth and its consequences in contemporary culture, for the full development of the creative process.”
In questo mito c’è un altro elemento molto difficile da comprendere in modo profondo, ovvero la presenza costante di un mondo invisible e sotterraneo rappresentato dall’Ade, che simboleggia ciò che del mondo resta invisibile. Approfondiremo tutti questi elementi al fine di comprendere a fondo il mito e le sue conseguenze nella cultura contemporanea, per lo sviluppo pieno del processo creativo.
